I can’t tell you how interesting I’ve found this trip planning to be. I’ve planned plenty of adventures in the past, but they always had a fixed end date. This time, the road ahead has no deadline, and that’s both liberating and a little unnerving. So yes, I figured I’d let my wandering mind stretch its legs early in this post. Now, where did we leave off last time? We were in Minneapolis after enjoying a game at Target Field. The next big question, of course, is where we head next. I initially considered driving north to see the headwaters of the Mississippi River.
However, that would mean a 225-mile drive northwest from Minneapolis, followed by a 358-mile swing back southwest to get to our next planned stop in Mitchell, South Dakota.
Decisions, Detours, and the Weeble Rules
With no deadlines pushing us, part of me wants to say “why not?”—but I’m not entirely sure it’s something Mrs. Weeble would enjoy or something I’m itching to see myself. When in doubt, we’ll stick with the Weeble Travel Rules and keep rolling west.
The Minneapolis-to-Mitchell leg is roughly 280 miles, nicely within our comfort range. And what’s the big attraction in Mitchell? The famous Corn Palace.
The Corn Palace: More Than Just Corn
The Corn Palace is exactly what it sounds like—a building decorated with huge murals made from corn and other grains. One of the travel vloggers I follow, Livin’ Our Vision, did a feature on it, and it looked surprisingly fun. If you’re curious, here’s the video:

Even if the corn art doesn’t grab you, it seems like a great place for people-watching.
Where Do We Park the RV?
Mitchell has a KOA and a couple of similar campgrounds, but those fall squarely into the “only if we must” category. Fortunately, there are several Harvest Hosts options nearby—including a vineyard that looks promising. That’s one of the joys of RV travel: you almost always have choices, and that freedom is a wonderful thing.
To be continued…
As always, we’re open to suggestions on fun stops, scenic detours, or hidden gems worth exploring on the road west. If you’ve got ideas, we’re all ears!
