Thinking About What Type of RV I Want

I’m going to pivot a bit from last week’s blog, where I was mapping out my dream trip to Alaska, and start thinking about what type of RV I’d actually like to buy. I know it might seem a little confusing to switch gears this fast, but that’s just how my ADHD brain works — the road winds where it wants to go.

Why a Diesel Motorhome Makes Sense

First off, I want a diesel motor. I’ve owned a Volkswagen TDI for the last seven or eight years, and I love that car. Whether I’m cruising at 55 or pushing 85 mph, it still gives me about 40 mpg on the highway. I’ve become a bit of a diesel fanboy, I’ll admit.

Now, I know I won’t be flying down the interstate at 85 mph in any motorhome — that’s not the point. But diesel engines deliver great mileage, torque, and longevity, which means more range and fewer fuel stops.

Keeping It Manageable in Size

I want it under 28 feet. That’s mostly so Mrs. Weeble might feel comfortable driving it — if I can ever talk her into it. Driving something longer than a car can feel intimidating at first, and if she never wants to drive it, that’s okay too.

By combining “diesel” and “under 28 feet,” I’ve basically narrowed my search to something built on a Mercedes Sprinter chassis. They usually get 15–18 mpg if you drive them reasonably — and let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to own a Mercedes?

Why Solar Power Matters

I’d also like a solar package or at least the ability to add one later. I prefer boondocking to crowded RV parks, so having solar means more independence and quiet nights out in the middle of nowhere.

Connecting the Dots to the Alaska Trip

And you know, it kind of makes sense to figure out what type of RV I want before finalizing the Alaska trip. The kind of rig I end up with will help determine where I camp — whether it’s big campgrounds with hookups, small rustic sites, or quiet boondocking spots along the way. Choosing the right RV will shape the whole experience.

I also want something reliable enough for long Alaska road trips but small enough to handle the tight turns and smaller campgrounds we’ll find up north. That balance is part of the fun in figuring all this out.

Window-Shopping on RV Trader

I know I’m not ready to buy yet — this is still the dreaming and planning stage — but that doesn’t stop me from window shopping. I’ve been spending time on RVTrader.com, checking out what’s out there in the used market. It’s a great way to get a feel for prices, layouts, and what kind of rigs show up on Sprinter chassis.

Of course, the danger in browsing is that you start seeing things you really want to buy right now. But I know I’m not there yet. I’m just gathering ideas, figuring out what fits my budget, and keeping the dream alive.

Don’t worry — the way my brain works, we’ll probably be back on the Alaska trip next week. Maybe.
